LibreSprite 1.3 (October 2, 2026)

The biggest release so far, with many fixes and 10 new contributors. In plain words:

  • Security: fixes for unsafe zip extraction, shell injection, memory-safety bugs in file decoders and ways scripts could escape their limits.
  • Drawing: more symmetry modes (diagonal ±45° and rotational 90°/180°), pixel-art angle snapping for lines, brushes up to 256 px, and a Shift+T shortcut for Tiled Mode.
  • Screens: high-DPI and first-run UI scale fixes, so LibreSprite no longer starts tiny or huge on many displays.
  • Files: type or paste a path in the file dialog; .aseprite files with layer groups open, with the grouped layers turned into top-level layers.
  • macOS: separate DMGs for Apple Silicon and Intel, ad-hoc signed. They are still not notarized, so macOS blocks the first launch: the fix.
  • Editor: option to invert scrolling.

Our pages document 1.3 and were tested on it. Known problems we found are listed where they matter, for example RotSprite 90° rotation and the command-line quirks.

LibreSprite 1.2 (2 March 2025, pre-release)

Initial support for drawing tablets with pressure, such as the XP-Pen Artist 12 (we tested it in 1.3: pressure scales the brush, with one bug). It is marked as a pre-release on GitHub, and it is the release that carries the newest official Android APK.

LibreSprite 1.1 (14 September 2024)

The first official Android build, aimed at tablets, and a greatly expanded scripting API.

LibreSprite 1.0 (17 November 2021)

The first official release after five years of community work on the 2016 fork, with JavaScript (on the V8 engine) and Lua scripting. Later versions moved to JavaScript only, now on the smaller QuickJS engine.

What is on the development branch

Changes merged after 1.3 (to 29 October 2026), not yet in a release. You only get them by building from source:

  • An MCP server (mcp-server.js) so AI assistants can inspect and edit the open sprite: MCP server.
  • Scripting: a fetch API (libcurl replaced by httplib), an HTTP server class, a filesystem module, a child-process module, per-script permissions, Layer.createCel(), sprite.totalFrames, more dialog widgets, and a working interface in --batch mode.
  • Command line: --set key=value to pass settings to scripts.
  • Fixes: pixel loss when rotating a selection by 90° with RotSprite, an off-by-one pixel in diagonal and rotational symmetry, better grayscale conversion (Rec. 709 weights).
  • Builds: a web (browser) build workflow, Windows builds moved to MSYS2 UCRT64 with Windows 10 as the minimum, Android dependencies moved into the main repository, SDL3 tablet pressure (SDL2 stays the default).

How to update

You installed…Update by
Windows installerRun the new installer; it replaces the old version. Your settings in %AppData%\LibreSprite are kept.
Windows zipExtract the new zip into a fresh folder. In portable mode, copy your libresprite.ini across.
macOS DMGDrag the new libresprite.app to Applications, replace, then run the xattr fix again.
Linux AppImageDownload the new AppImage and delete the old one.
Flatpak / distribution packageflatpak update or your package manager. Versions can lag behind (Flathub builds 1.2); see below.
AndroidInstall a newer APK over the old one. If Android refuses (different signature), uninstall first.

LibreSprite has no built-in update check, so watch the GitHub releases page (GitHub’s “Watch → Releases only” sends an email for each release) or come back here.

Dotto, Besprited and other names

  • Dotto is a separate, from-scratch pixel-art editor started by the LibreSprite team in 2022 (“LibreSprite Dotto”), with a web pre-alpha. Its repository has seen no pushes since August 2024. It is not a new version of LibreSprite.
  • Besprited is a community fork of LibreSprite, active in October 2026. The 1.3 release notes credit code cleanup that came from it.
  • Aseprite is the program LibreSprite forked from: how they differ.

What does 1.1-dev or 1.3-dev mean?

A development build made between releases, such as a self-compiled copy or the browser version. Official release builds show a plain number like “1.3”.

When is the next release?

The project doesn’t publish dates. Releases so far: November 2021, September 2024, March 2025 and October 2026.
