Download LibreSprite
LibreSprite 1.3 came out on October 2, 2026. Its only official download location is the project’s GitHub releases page; Flathub and Linux distributions package it too. Below, the file you need for your machine, its exact size and SHA-256, and what to do after downloading.

Short answer
Which file do I need?
Windows PC: the installer (…windows-x86_64-installer.exe), or the zip on Windows on Arm. Mac: the arm64 DMG for M1–M4, the x86_64 DMG for Intel. Linux: the AppImage, or your distribution’s package. The “Source code” archives at the bottom of the GitHub page are not the app.

These are every file on the 1.3 release page. We downloaded each app build on November 1, 2026 and computed its SHA-256 ourselves; the links go straight to GitHub.

The release has no Android APK and no web build. The newest official Android build is the 1.2 pre-release APK, and the browser version is covered on LibreSprite online.
“Source code (zip)” is not the app
GitHub adds two archives to every release, Source code (zip) and Source code (tar.gz). They contain the C++ source, not a program, so there is no libresprite.exe inside. This is the most common download mistake in the project’s issues (#605 “no exe file”). The two SOURCE.CODE.+.submodules archives are also source, for building it yourself.
Which version should I use?
| Version | Date | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| 1.3 (latest) | October 2, 2026 | Always, on Windows, macOS and Linux. Security fixes, Intel and Apple Silicon Mac builds. |
| 1.2 (pre-release) | March 2, 2025 | Only for Android: it has the newest official APK. |
| 1.2 (Flathub) | March 2025 (the listing says 1.1-dev) | If you want Flathub’s sandbox and automatic updates and can live with an older version. |
master | October 29, 2026 | Developers: 50 commits after 1.3 (QuickJS scripting, MCP server). No official binaries; build it. |
32-bit Windows, Windows 7 and old Macs
There is no 32-bit build of 1.3: both Windows files are x64. LibreSprite’s main branch now requires Windows 10 or later (raised in October 2026), and the official site still lists “Windows 7 or above” from older releases, which we could not verify for 1.3. The Mac builds are 64-bit only too, one for Apple Silicon and one for Intel. If your system is older, an older release or a Linux distribution’s package is the realistic route.

Versions from Repology and Flathub, checked November 1, 2026. Not packaged for Debian, Ubuntu, Homebrew or winget at that date.
We installed it ourselves from Arch, openSUSE Tumbleweed, Void and Alpine edge (1.3), and Fedora Rawhide (1.2); Ubuntu 24.04, Debian 13 and Fedora 44 have no package. Install on Linux has the commands. On Windows, Scoop’s extras bucket has 1.3 (scoop bucket add extras, then scoop install extras/libresprite); Chocolatey is still at 1.0.
Unofficial download sites
Search results for LibreSprite include download portals (Softonic, SourceForge mirrors, Uptodown and others) and re-uploaded Mac builds on itch.io. Some are simply mirrors of the GitHub files, some are old, and you cannot easily tell which. There is also no reason to use them: GitHub is free, fast and official. The old domain libresprite.org no longer works. The project’s own website is libresprite.github.io; this site, libresprite.dev, is an independent guide and never hosts the program.
How to check your download
Compare the SHA-256 of your file with the table above. If it matches, you have exactly the file GitHub serves.

Download FAQ
Is LibreSprite free to download?
Yes. Every official file is free, with no account, trial or ads. Anyone asking for payment or a sign-up to download LibreSprite is not the project.
Is there a LibreSprite installer?
For Windows, yes: libresprite-v1.3-windows-x86_64-installer.exe. macOS uses a drag-to-Applications DMG and Linux a single AppImage file, which need no installer.
Is LibreSprite on Steam, itch.io or the Microsoft Store?
Not officially. It is published on GitHub, Flathub and Linux repositories. The Steam and itch.io listings people find are Aseprite (paid) or unofficial uploads.
How big is LibreSprite?
About 30 MB for the Windows installer, 22–25 MB for the Mac DMGs and 94 MB for the Linux AppImage, which bundles its libraries. Installed on Windows it takes about 99 MB.
